Raiders rally in five sets to deny Owls again

KLAMATH FALLS – The 11th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team played with fire again Wednesday night but came out cool on the other side, surviving another five-set match at Danny Miles Court with a 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12 besting of Oregon Tech.

The Raiders (15-3 overall, 9-1 Cascade Conference) ended the fourth set on a 6-1 run, then were the first to get any traction in the fifth with seven straight points after trailing 7-6. They've taken three conference matches to a fifth frame, including two against the Owls (17-7, 5-5), and won them all.

It was SOU's 24th straight win against Oregon Tech and its fifth straight overall.

Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito) shook off some early miscues to finish with 20 kills and 15 digs. Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) joined her in coming through late, totaling 18 kills and 15 digs, and Lauren McGowne (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) divvied up a season-high 59 assists.

Brookelynn Cole (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic)'s ace swung the match in the fifth set, giving SOU the first two-point lead for either team at 9-7. Pinheiro, who forced the tie moments earlier, struck with another kill in the rally, and she stopped a quick Owl spurt with a kill after they had cut the deficit to 13-11. Another Pinheiro kill ended it.

Pinheiro had six kills in the must-win fourth set and Atanda had five.

Another big blocking night put the Raiders at 15 as a team, led by Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) and Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland), who both assisted six and had one to themselves while Abbie Hanser (Billings, Mont./Billings Central Catholic) assisted four. Gasman and Boehnke also went for 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Cole, too, was responsible for lowering OIT's attacking clip to .180 with a match-best 21 digs, and Tyana Andrews (Rochester, Wash./Centralia) contributed 11.

Tech's Kelsey Sampson hit the Raiders up for 17 kills. Whitney Webster and Madisen Garlie had 10 each.

The Raiders are now an eight-day hiatus before their travels take them to Corban and Northwest Christian on Oct. 17 and 18.
