ASHLAND – Second-ranked Southern Oregon's dual with the third-ranked Great Falls Argos on Thursday night swung as fast as a Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) pin.

In other words: really, really fast.

The Raiders finished off a 25-15 statement win over their West Region rivals at Riehm Arena despite digging themselves into a 12-4 hole four matchups into the night. That's when, at 157 pounds, Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon)'s decision became the first of five straight weight classes SOU would claim.

Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) had a decision at 165 pounds, Gutches pinned his man at 174, Jacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka) tacked on a decision at 184, and Taylor Johnson (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) sealed the team triumph with his first-round win by fall at 197. All tallied up, Devin Poppen (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City)'s early major decision gave the Raiders six of 10 bouts and payback was delivered for SOU's 38-16 loss last November in Montana.

"They have a style that's hard to score points on and slows you down, so we had to wrestle smart," Raider coach Mike Ritchey said. "We like to be aggressive, but if you get too aggressive they can take advantage. We didn't let them do that for the most part and I thought we wrestled really well."

Poppen, a 133-pound freshman, scored three near-falls and a late takedown to upset 11th-ranked Jared Berlinger, 17-8. Poppen is 6-3 this season with bonus points in every win.

The Raiders didn't get another win until just before intermission, as three highly-touted Argos in the lower weights – fourth-ranked Luke Schlosser (125), third-ranked Michael Ruiz (141) and third-ranked Ryan Martin (149) – each came out on top, highlighted by a Ruiz pin.

Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon), now 7-2, then notched a 7-0 upset of Chad Cebulski, who is the only 149-pounder ranked ahead of him in the West. Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) followed suit at 165, improving to 5-2 with an 8-5 decision over Billy Goforth that he broke open in the second round.

At 174 pounds, the top-ranked Gutches had Brock Picard on his back within three seconds of their match starting and only needed to do a little prying to register his third straight pin in 18 seconds. It gave the Raiders their first lead at 16-12.

Abrams, ranked No. 3, chipped away at a 5-2 win against 14th-ranked Taylor Vaughn at 184, and Johnson reaffirmed his No. 2 ranking at 197 pounds with his second pin in three outings – a 1:37 job that he started with a takedown a couple seconds in.

Argos heavyweight Dylan Lemery capped the night with a 4-3 defeat of Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton).

The Raiders and Argos have split 10 duals down the middle since they first met in 2006.

SOU (2-1 overall) is off to the Nor Cal Collegiate Open on Saturday in Redding, Calif.
