Weber's triple-double, Thompson's 27 help SOU survive Simpson in OT

ASHLAND – It took two entire halves, but Simpson finally stopped making shots Tuesday night and the 17th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team scored the first 10 points of overtime to bank a 90-78 win at Riehm Arena.

Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) registered the first triple-double in Brian McDermott's 19 years as head coach of SOU – 10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, and Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) was right at his early average with 27 points and 12 boards for the Raiders (3-0).

SOU was approaching desperation mode down 66-60, then 66-61 when Simpson's Rufus Humphrey was called for a personal foul and a technical foul with 4:34 remaining. Thompson sunk four straight free throws, and his 3-pointer with 3:34 left put the Raiders up 70-68.

Leading 75-72 after Weber hit Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels) for a back-door layup, the Raiders failed to get the stop they needed as Jonnie Washburn's 3-pointer with 27 seconds left ultimately sent the game to overtime.

The Redhawks shot 57 percent in the first half (17-for-30) and 50 percent in the second (12-for-24), but went 1-for-11 in the extra frame.

Spear, who went 6-for-7 with 13 points and five assists, got free for another layup to start overtime, and after a Simpson miss Weber found Thompson for his fourth and final triple.

Jacob Kaler (Camas, Wash./Camas Valley) stopped the Redhawks, who led 38-35 at the half, from pulling away much earlier with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting, and Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) went 7-for-11 with 14 points, eight boards and two overtime buckets.

Weber produced despite an atypical 2-for-10 performance from the floor on a night when SOU went 32-for-64. He has 21 assists in his last two games.

Four different Redhawks reached double figures: Anthony Williams (18 points), Washburn (15), Marc Kirkland (14) and Dalton Thacker (12).

SOU isn't the first Cascade Conference team that's been put on its heels by the Redhawks. They opened the season with a win at Eastern Oregon before losing the next day.

The Raiders have won nine straight in the series, but the teams are scheduled to meet again in Redding, Calif., on Nov. 25.
