ASHLAND – Southern Oregon guards Ashley Claussen (Scotts Valley, Calif./Santa Cruz) and Autumn Durand (Onalaska, Wash./Onalaska) rescued the 15th-ranked Raiders from their offensive woes and a second-half pickle Friday night in a key 90-82 win over Eastern Oregon at Riehm Arena.
Claussen scored a career-high 25 points, adding six assists and six rebounds, and Durand went for 23 points and a 11 boards, four of which were picked up on the offensive end. The Raiders (11-1 overall, 2-1 Cascade Conference) overcame 28 turnovers and what was once a 64-55 deficit with 10:38 left.
Larissa Quintana's bucket and free throw gave the Mountaineers (10-4, 2-1) that nine-point lead before SOU stormed back with a 16-2 run that was capped by Claussen's four-point play, putting the Raiders ahead 71-66 with 6:15 to play. The run also featured five straight Bree Park (Bellingham, Wash./Meridian) points.
EOU stayed in it, cutting the lead to one point on five different possessions but never taking it away. After Nikki Osborne's jumper trimmed SOU's advantage to 79-78 with 1:57 left, Kristen Schoenherr (Rainier, Wash./Rainier) drew a foul and made a pair of free throws on the other end. A missed Eastern layup then led to Claussen's lob to Anderson, who caught and converted at the basket.
Claussen helped seal the win by making six of seven free throws in the last minutes. She went 14-for-17 from the line overall.
Seventeen of SOU's turnovers – most of them caused by Eastern's trapping zone defense – happened in the first half. The Mountaineers, however, only went to the break with a 36-35 lead as Durand drained a shot just inside of half-court at the buzzer.
SOU ended up 28-for-60 from the field, and EOU went 32-for-81 (though the Raiders did shoot 13 more free throws).
Brenna Anderson (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) was a spark in her best night of the season with 10 points off SOU's bench, going 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) chipped in nine points and seven points, and Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) had seven and eight.
Maya Ah You went for 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting off the bench to lead the Mountaineers. Airshay Rogers had 16 points and Osborne added nine points and eight boards. Maloree Moss, Kelsey Hill and Jordan Klebaum each had three of the team's 16 steals.
The Raiders have now won two straight since against the Mountaineers after losing the previous eight. At 5:30 p.m. Saturday they'll take on College of Idaho, which improved to 2-1 in the CCC with a win at Oregon Tech on Friday.
