SAN FRANCISCO – Wrestling for the third time in as many days, Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) remained strong and claimed the 174-pound title Saturday at the California Collegiate Open hosted by San Francisco State.

Gutches won four straight to top his class, finishing the day with a 7-2 decision in the title bout over Colorado Mesa's Chester Granard and Outstanding Wrestler honors. The rest of his path consisted of wins against Simpson's Matt Tsarnas (pin, 4:49), Oregon State's Zach Cardwell (3-0) and Stanford's Keaton Subjeck (8-2).

The seventh-ranked Raiders went home with two other places in Taylor Johnson (Redmond, Ore./Redmond), who went 3-1 and was runner-up at 197 pounds, and Jacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka), who went 5-1 and placed third.

Johnson dominated Cal-State Bakersfield's Matt Williams (13-3), San Francisco State's Andrew Reggi (7-0) and Bakersfield's Alex Encarnacion (pin, 2:10) to reach the final. There, he dropped a 3-1 decision to Cal Baptist's Caleb Gerl.

Abrams started with a 15-0 major decision over Cal Baptist's Bradley Beaudette before unattached David Rice knocked him out of the championship bracket, 8-2. He had to win four consolation tilts, ultimately defeating Cal Baptist's Kenneth Tribble, 6-3, to secure third place.

"It was a tough tourney and we wrestled well overall," Raiders head coach Mike Ritchey said. "This is something to build on as we head down the stretch."

That stretch includes two last dual meets – next Saturday at Simon Fraser (B.C.), and Feb. 15 against Pacific at Bob Riehm Arena.
