Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MERCED, Calif. – The lineups were all over the map Friday, but the results were the same for the Southern Oregon University volleyball team: a couple of sweeps at the Holiday Inn Express Invitational.

The Raiders (5-1 overall) had to labor early before progressively wearing down San Diego Christian in the morning match, 28-26, 25-17, 25-15. A couple hours later, they did the same thing to host U.C. Merced in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-17 triumph.

Outside hitter Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito) led the usual cast of SOU stars in the opener with 14 kills, 13 digs and three aces – her third double-double of the season. Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) added 12 kills and four digs, Lauren McGowne (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) had 28 assists and 10 digs, and Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) went for six kills and 11 blocks.

San Diego Christian was led by six kills apiece from Ashley Simpson and Natalie Williamson. The Raiders trailed 23-20 in the first set, but didn't have to sweat much the rest of the day.

Shelby Young (Lincoln, Calif./Whitney) stepped in to have a career-best match against Merced with 12 kills on 30 swings. Middle Abbie Hanser (Billings, Mont./Billings Central Catholic) poured on some gravy with six kills on 12 tries and five blocks.

Brookelynn Cole (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) corralled a match-high 27 digs, and Gasman contributed seven kills and three blocks.

The Raiders attacked at a .216 average and limited Merced to .068.

SOU returns to action at 9 a.m. on Saturday with a rematch against Cal State San Marcos, which the Raiders discarded in four sets last weekend. At 5 p.m., they'll have their final nonleague match against William Jessup.
