Beacons get by Raiders in final minute for 95-92 upset

EUGENE – The 15th-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team hit a road bump Friday night in a 95-92 loss to Northwest Christian at the Morse Events Center.

A Sammi Pitts 3-pointer gave the Beacons (5-7 overall, 3-2 Cascade Conference) a 92-90 lead with 52 seconds remaining. SOU's Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) tied it with a layup on the other end, but NCU's Chandler Gabrio drew a foul with 20 seconds left and made one of two free throws to put the Beacons up for good.

Autumn Durand (Onalaska, Wash./Onalaska)'s potential go-ahead jumper rimmed out with nine seconds left, and Pitts and Hannah Frederick made free throws inside the final four seconds to seal NCU's win.

SOU, which had won four straight against the Beacons, fell to 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the CCC.

Smith scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Raiders, who shot 52 percent (35-for-67) as a team. Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) came off the bench to match a career-high with 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting, scoring 14 of those to help the Raiders take a 52-46 advantage into halftime.

NCU shot 57 percent, going 18-for-32 in a back-and-forth second half. Andrea Gloss went 11-for-17 inside with 22 points, while Frederick notched 18 points and nine assists and Melyssa Weber had 17 points and five assists. Gabrio added 15 points and 10 boards off the bench.

Durand's bucket with 15:50 left matched SOU's largest lead at 60-51 before NCU began chipping away. When NCU tied it at 71, Durand and Smith scored nine quick points to make it 80-73 with 6:53 left.

Kristen Schoenherr (Rainier, Wash./Rainier) totaled 17 points and six assists for SOU. Durand added 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

SOU is back in action at 5:30 p.m. at Corban, which suffered its first conference defeat Friday against Oregon Tech, 54-49.
