No. 15 SOU salvages weekend split with 68-57 defeat of Corban

SALEM – Southern Oregon pocketed a weekend split by pulling away late Saturday night for a 68-57 win over the Corban Warriors in Cascade Conference action at the C.E. Jeffers Center.

Junior point guard Ashley Claussen (Scotts Valley, Calif./Santa Cruz) paced the 15th-ranked Raiders (13-2 overall, 4-2 CCC) with 15 points and seven assists. Up 54-48 with 5:33 left, Claussen drilled a 3-pointer to give SOU its largest lead of the second half.

Jade Lowery responded with a 3 for the Warriors, but Claussen assisted consecutive layups by Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) and Autumn Durand (Onalaska, Wash./Onalaska) to start an 11-3 run and blow the game open.

The Warriors started the weekend unbeaten in conference play but dropped to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the CCC. Tara Van Weerdhuizen, the preseason CCC player of the year, headed their cause with 16 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

At 5-1, Eastern Oregon is the only team remaining with less than two conference losses.

Outside of Van Weerdhuizen, the Warriors were without answers. SOU held them to 28-percent shooting (20-for-72), including a 3-for-20 mark from outside. Julia Young scored 11 and Jade Lowery added 11 points but needed 18 shots to get them.

SOU – which had its five-game win streak stopped Friday in a last-minute, 95-92 loss at Northwest Christian – got solid contributions from Durand, who had 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, and Kristen Schoenherr (Rainier, Wash./Rainier), who added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Raiders went 13-for-35 in the first half, needing a last-second Claussen triple to give them a 29-26 edge, but went 12-for-26 in the second. They also went 14-for-19 from the three-throw line led by Claussen's 5-for-6 effort.

Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) added six points and nine rebounds, Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) had four points and 10 boards, and Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) rounded out the frontcourt trio with six points and four boards.

The Raiders return to Ashland next weekend for games Friday against Evergreen State and Saturday against Northwest University.
