ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University wrestling team's most dominant performance of the season was also its first shutout win in six years.

Punctuated by five pins, including one in each of the first three contests of the night, the second-ranked Raiders beat up on Simpson (Calif.) to the tune of a 50-0 dual win Thursday at Riehm Arena, upping their record to 12-2.

The banged-up Red Hawks forfeited the 125-pound weight class and things didn't get much better for them after that. Seventh-ranked Devin Poppen (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) pinned Hayden Zimmerman in 1:20 at 133, Trevor Hancock (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) pinned Brennen Collins in 4:23 at 141, and third-ranked Tyler Cowger (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) pinned Blaine Lindahl in 4:31 at 149.

At 157, in the only match of the night between two ranked opponents, No. 3 Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) took a 3-2 lead into the final period against No. 13 Ritchie Ortiz and didn't let him budge the rest of the way, staying on top to earn a riding-time bonus and a 4-2 victory. That made the score 27-0 at intermission.

At 165, Brock Crocker (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) took advantage of his start with a 13-0 major decision over Dominic Merlo. He led 4-0 after two rounds and controlled the third, ending the match with a near fall.

Top-ranked Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater) got Matt Tsarnas in a head lock at 174, earning his win by fall in 1:57. Fourth-ranked Jacob Abrams (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka) then earned a 10-1 major decision with a last-second takedown of Marcus Zachary at 184, and second-ranked Taylor Johnson (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) worked Henry Campos for a win by fall in 4:37.

Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton), the NAIA's fifth-ranked heavyweight, ended the night with an 8-5 decision against Augie Alcantar, avoiding a first-round fall and coming back from a 5-4 deficit.

Poppen is now 13-1 in duals with nine pins, and Gutches has earned pins in seven of his eight dual contests. Urrutia ran his dual win streak to 10 and Johnson ran his to nine (including six by fall).

The Raiders also defeated Simpson earlier this season in Redding, Calif., by a score of 40-8.

SOU has a chance to win its 13th dual for the first time since 2010 on Friday at seventh-ranked Menlo. On Saturday the Raiders will travel to San Francisco for the California Collegiate Open.
