NCU's bench bites Raiders in first home loss

ASHLAND – Austin Kuemper went for 18 points and eight rebounds but Northwest Christian's bench outscored its starters Saturday night in an 80-69 win over 12th-ranked Southern Oregon at Riehm Arena.

Javonte Byrd scored 14 points, Jack Hackman added 13 and Kyle Ferreira made three 3-pointers for the Beacons (15-7 overall, 8-5 Cascade Conference), whose reserves totaled 29 of their 45 points in the second half.

SOU (19-5, 9-4) hadn't lost at home since last season's CCC quarterfinals against NCU. Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) had 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, but the Raiders went 3-for-16 from downtown and totaled 15 turnovers to NCU's six.

Three of those Raider turnovers were committed when NCU stretched its 51-48 lead at the 12-minute mark with 13 unanswered points.

The Raiders cut it to 68-63 with 1:23 to play as Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) scored the last four points in a 13-2 run, but Kuemper made two free throws and Byrd shut the door with a 3-point play.

NCU shot 29-for-57 from the field to become the third Raider opponent this season to shoot over 50 percent. The Beacons, who also went 8-for-16 from 3-point range, have won five straight in the series against SOU.

Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) added 13 points and three rebounds and Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels) went 4-for-5 with 12 points and two assists for the Raiders. Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath), whose triple stripped NCU's lead to 36-31 right before halftime, went 5-for-8 with 12 points off the bench.

For the Beacons, Travis Pacos chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

SOU is back on the road next weekend at Northwest and Evergreen State before returning home for a Feb. 14 date with Oregon Tech.
