Southern Oregon starts slow, can't recover in setback at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – A disastrous first half put the Southern Oregon men's basketball team in a hole too deep to get out of Friday night in an 84-68 loss at Northwest University.

The Eagles (14-11 overall, 4-9 Cascade Conference) shot 17-of-27 in the first half en route to a 46-27 advantage. Nemanja Grujicic tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds, CJ Carter scored 20, Dak Shagren had 19 and Tomas Ogbaslassie added 14.

The 17th-ranked Raiders (19-6, 9-5) trailed by 20 in the opening minutes of the second half but cut Northwest's lead to 55-45 with 10:50 remaining on a Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) 3-pointer. That was as close as it'd get.

DeSaulnier scored a team-high 18 on 8-for-13 shooting with six rebounds for the Raiders. Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) scored 17, Kenny Meyer (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs) had 13 and Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) went for six points and nine assists while battling foul trouble.

The Raiders shot 43 percent from the field, their lowest mark since a loss on Dec. 6 at Warner Pacific. That stemmed from a first half in which they went 10-for-25 and got to the free-throw line just twice.

Northwest also benefited from 16 second-chance points to SOU's four.

SOU and Northwest have split their last three season series.

The Raiders will try to rebound Saturday at Evergreen State, which on Friday won its first CCC game this season in an upset of Oregon Tech.
