Kennedy earns 200th win at SOU as Raiders rout Beacons

ASHLAND Lynn Kennedy won his 200th game as Southern Oregon University's head women's basketball coach as his 13th-ranked Raiders ran away from Northwest Christian, 84-53, on Saturday night at Riehm Arena.

A chorus of Raiders left with solid stat lines: Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) (14 points, seven rebounds), Ashley Claussen (Scotts Valley, Calif./Santa Cruz) (10, five assists), Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) (10 points, five rebounds) and Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) (10 points, 10 rebounds).

The Raiders (19-3 overall, 10-3 Cascade Conference) weren't especially sharp offensively – they shot 44 percent and were 6-for-18 from outside – but they had a 57-38 advantage on the glass and forced NCU into 27 percent shooting (19-for-70).

The frustrating night for the Beacons included a 3-for-25 effort on 3-point attempts. Hannah Frederick scored nine points and Melyssa Weber added eight to lead the offensive effort.

SOU achieved separation in the latter half of the first period, turning an 18-15 edge to 44-29 by halftime, making seven of its last eight shots with a pair of Claussen 3-pointers included. Less than seven minutes into the second half, the lead was 30.

The Raiders avenged a 95-92 loss at Northwest Christian on Jan. 2. They're 10-0 at home this season.

West's double-double was her fifth off the bench. She added three blocks.

Kennedy is one win away from leading the Raiders to their third 20-win season in a row. In 10 years at SOU he's amassed a record of 200-103, ranking second on the program's career wins list behind Shirley Huyett (220-111), for whom he briefly served as an assistant when she left SOU for Idaho State in 2001.

SOU will make the trip to Kennedy's alma mater, Northwest (Wash.), next Friday before heading to Evergreen State on Saturday.
