SOU triumphs 3-2 in first meeting with OIT

KLAMATH FALLS – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team got back into attack mode Friday night and scored its 10th win of the season, a 3-2 upending of Oregon Tech in a key Cascade Conference matchup.

Johnnie Workman assisted Dakota Scott for the first goal of the game in the 17th minute, Paul Matyas was assisted by Greg Rapet for the go-ahead goal in the 49th, and Brendan Allen tacked on in the 59th with an assist from Brett Butler.

The Raiders and Owls entered the contest tied for ninth place in the CCC standings but both are still in the hunt for a spot in the eight-team conference playoffs with two games remaining. SOU improved to 10-6 overall and 5-6 in the CCC, while OIT went to 6-9 and 4-7.

The offensive output was SOU's best in seven games. Scott's goal, his second of the season, put an end to SOU's 230-minute scoreless drought as Workman headed a cross to set up a 16-yard strike.

OIT's Trinidad Flores tied it 46 seconds before halftime with a header assisted by Benito Torres-Mata, but Matyas wasted little time with a header after the break for his second score of the season.

Allen's team-best eighth goal was the result of a one-on-one with the keeper that made it 3-1. Mata-Torres hooked up with Flores again in the 64th minute to trim the lead to one, but the Raiders shut down the Owls for the final 25 minutes.

SOU worked the last three-plus minutes a man down due to a red card.

OIT had 23 total shots to SOU's 16, but SOU had an 11-2 advantage in corners.

Jonathan Morales earned the keeper win with five saves.

SOU is home next Friday and Saturday against Carroll and Great Falls. The Raiders and Owls will cap the regular season with a nonleague game Oct. 30 at Raider Stadium.
