Raiders get hot early in 96-84 win at Willamette

SALEM – Southern Oregon's clinical first half was enough to overcome a sluggish second Saturday night against Willamette, as Ben DeSaulnier had 28 points eight rebounds and the Raiders banked a 96-84 win at Cone Field House.

DeSaulnier, coming off a 32-point effort last Friday, scored 22 of those points by going 7-for-8 from the field before halftime on the way to a 55-32 lead. He scored SOU's final 13 going into the break and ended up 9-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

Jordan West contributed 19 points and 6 rebounds on an 8-of-14 performance. Clay Sierra registered 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench, Joel Spear went for 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Justin Martin scored 10 of his 13 in the first half to go with four assists in his first appearance of the season.

The Raiders improved to 4-1 going into next Tuesday's exhibition at Humboldt State and next weekend's games against William Jessup and Unviersity of California, Merced at the Oregon Tech tournament.

Willamette (1-1) stormed back in the second half behind Nico Troplent's 24 points. After two Troplent free throws at the end of a 27-10 run, the Bearcats had SOU's lead cut 73-67 with 7:43 to play.

SOU answered and took back control for good with a quick 7-0 spurt, made up of layups by DeSaulnier and Jordan Browne-Moore and Martin's third 3-pointer.

The Raiders finished with a team shooting percentage of 56 (34-of-61) and 12 made triples. Willamette shot 43 percent (29-of-67) and went 7-of-28 from downtown.

The meeting was the 68th all-time between the teams but the first in six years.
