SOU downs William Jessup, improves to 5-1

KLAMATH FALLS Jordan West and Ben DeSaulnier combined for 50 points and the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team held off a late William Jessup rally to secure a 98-92 win Friday at Oregon Tech's Midland Empire Classic.

The Raiders (5-1 overall), who led by as many as 19 points in the second half, had another crisp offensive performance with 57-percent shooting (33-of-58) in both halves – their fourth time over 50 percent this season. West scored 22 of his season-high 29 in the first half and was 10-of-19 from the field, while DeSaulnier went 7-for-9 with 21 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Joel Spear went 5-for-7 and made both of his 3-point attempts for 14 points, four assists and three steals, while Justin Martin canned 3 of 5 attempts from downtown for 12 points. Making his first career start, freshman Tristen Holmes contributed seven points and five assists.

SOU was up 17 by halftime and had its biggest lead at 86-67 with 7:23 to play. The Warriors (4-2) stayed in it by making 15 3-pointers, including four after that point. Guillermo Nunez's eighth triple of the day made it 92-87 with 1:28 left before DeSaulnier made four straight free throws to seal it.

Nunez's 27 points off the bench (including 21 in the second half) led William Jessup. Darius Clement went for 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Darell Polle had 15 points and four assists.

Despite missing their last three free throws, the Raiders had their first respectable day at the line of the season by going 24-of-32. They'd been under 70 percent in each of their five previous games.

The Raiders also got eight points and 10 rebounds out of Clay Sierra, and Brennan Rakoz added seven and seven.

They've won seven straight overall against William Jessup, which competes at the NAIA Div. I level.

SOU returns to action Saturday in a 3 p.m. meeting with University of California, Merced.
