PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ben DeSaulnier didn't settle in from long range until late Thursday, but the sophomore guard was locked in all night Friday to give the Southern Oregon men's basketball team a split at the Arizona Christian Firestorm Classic.
The Raiders (3-1 overall) defeated Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 81-63 behind DeSaulnier's career-high 32 points and six assists with no turnovers. A day after scoring 14 of his 16 points in the second half, he went 11-of-19 from the field and 3-for-6 from 3-point range, making him 7-for-11 from downtown at the tournament.
Jordan West added 12 of his 14 points in the second half and Joel Spear balanced the box score with eight points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks for the Raiders. Brennan Rakoz added 10 points, Kenny Meyer had nine and Clay Sierra grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
SOU fell into an early 19-10 hole before DeSaulnier got going. He sunk three of his triples and scored 14 points in the first half to fuel a 26-5 run.
The Raiders shot just 37 percent in the first half but had a 36-27 lead at the break. Despite a sharper second half, their final shooting percentage of 40.3 was its lowest in 28 games dating back to last season. They atoned for that partially by committing just eight turnovers.
Embry-Riddle (0-2) was led by Logan Skurdal's 17 points and Nick Agostino's 16.
SOU plays an exhibition game at 6 p.m. Sunday at University of Oregon. The Raiders' next counter is Nov. 14 at Willamette.
