REDDING, Calif. – The Southern Oregon University softball team went 2-1 Friday on the first day of the Simpson Tournament, hitting three home runs in its first win and receiving four multi-hit efforts in the next.
The Raiders (8-1 overall) were dealt their first loss of the season in the morning session, 6-3 by the University of British Columbia. They bounced back by defeating William Jessup, 8-2, and then Hope International, 11-3.
Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) pitched a complete game against William Jessup, yielding five hits in improving to 2-0 and lowering her ERA to 2.26. She was helped by a three-homer inning as Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage), Tyler Burke (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) and Kristin Ahern (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Rosary) all went deep for the first time in their careers. Gonzalez went 3-for-3 and Gina Ayala (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe) was 2-for-3.
Against Hope International, Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) upped her record to 4-0 by allowing six hits over six innings. Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, while Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork), Jazmin Ruvalcaba (Carson, Calif./Banning) and Sulie Augstine contributed two hits apiece.
Gonzalez and Megan Scherer (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) both stroked two hits in the opener.
The Raiders are scheduled to play three more on Saturday: at 9 a.m. against San Diego Christian, 4:30 p.m. against 14th-ranked Biola and 7 p.m. against 10th-ranked Simpson.
