Raiders make history with perfect score against Pacific

ASHLAND – The "Senior Night" presentation was only slightly more concise than the dual itself between Southern Oregon and Pacific University on Friday at Bob Riehm Arena.

The second-ranked Raiders took seven wins by fall and three forfeits against the Boxers – equating to a 60-0 final, the first perfect score in the 58-season history of SOU's program.

The Raiders closed the dual season with a record of 14-2. Next up is the NAIA Western Region Qualifying Tournament next Saturday in Havre, Mont.

After 10 seniors were honored by SOU head coach Mike Ritchey, the Boxers spotted SOU 18 points with forfeits to Coleman Johns (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) at 125, Brock Crocker (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) at 165 and Cody Jones (Dallas, Ore./Dallas) at 174. The Raiders then promptly took care of business on the mat.

Seventh-ranked Devin Poppen (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) worked a win by fall against 133-pounder Eric Harder, who came into the night with a record of 23-10, in 2:48. Trevor Hancock (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) finished off Shawn Spear in 1:20 at 141, fourth-ranked Tyler Cowger (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) got Keith Thomas in 1:02 at 149, and third-ranked Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) pinned Ricky Ridela in 2:30 at 157 leading into intermission.

Brock Gutches (Central Point, Ore./Crater), the top-ranked 174-pounder in the NAIA, moved up to 184 due to the forfeit in his class. He was the only Raider who needed a second round – though he almost wrapped up a technical fall in the first – but pinned Joey Norcia 17 seconds into it.

Taylor Johnson (Redmond, Ore./Redmond) – a two-time All-American who was also awarded a No. 1 ranking this week at 197 – slammed Mycal Sigado in 15 seconds, and eighth-ranked heavyweight Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton) got Bryan Hoffman in 50 seconds.

This marks the first time the Raiders have had two shutouts in the same season since 1985-86. Two weeks ago, in their previous home dual, they blanked Simpson, 50-0.

Following the dual, the Raiders had three exhibition challenge matches that Ritchey said would influence who will be a part of the 12-person group going to the regional tourney. Casey Coulter (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) defeated Coleman Johns (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) at 125, Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) defeated Crocker at 165, and Reed Tennyson (Dillingham, Alaska/Dillingham) defeated Jones at 174.
