Evergreen unable to hang with 13th-ranked SOU

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Southern Oregon women's basketball team had advantages over Evergreen in size and depth and used them both Saturday night in a 74-58 triumph at CRC Gymnasium.

A night after going for 32 points and 10 rebounds, junior forward Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) registered 20 and 11 for the 13th-ranked Raiders (21-3 overall, 12-3 Cascade Conference). Her counterpart inside, Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale), had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Geoducks (13-8, 7-7), who have played the latter part of the season with a six-person roster, were led by Natasha Trinidad's 12 points and six rebounds. However, their three leading scorers on the season –LaNieci Weatherspoon, Uriah Thomas and Sadee Jones – combined to go 11-for-44 from the field.

The Raiders held a 50-35 edge on the glass, turning 16 offensive rebounds – including five from Meister – into 16 second-chance points.

They were up 33-21 at halftime and 57-33 midway through the second, trailing only in the opening minute of the game. A mini-run cut it to 12 points with a couple minutes left, but Ashley Claussen (Scotts Valley, Calif./Santa Cruz)'s 3-pointer stopped that.

Claussen wound up with nine points, six assists and six rebounds. Tiani Bradford (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) led the Raider bench with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.

SOU has won nine of its last 10, all of them by at least 10 points. SOU's first meeting with Evergreen resulted in a 77-56 victory in Ashland on Jan. 9.

The Raiders will travel Tuesday to Eugene for a nonleague game against New Hope Christian before returning to Ashland and CCC play on Saturday against Oregon Tech.
