SOU wins one of two in CCC openers at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Southern Oregon softball team let one slip away but broke out its power strokes to secure a split in its Cascade Conference openers Friday afternoon at Northwest.

Northwest's four-run fifth inning sunk the Raiders (20-10 overall) in a 4-3 loss in the opener. But Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork) and Davalin Ontiveros (Bakersfield, Calif./Centennial) homered in the second game, an 8-4 victory that was closed out with three insurance runs in the seventh.

Kristin Ahern (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Rosary) hit a solo shot in the Game 1, but that was SOU's only hit until the sixth inning. That and a fielding error put the Raiders up 2-0 into the fifth, where the Eagles (5-5) loaded the bases with no outs and took advantage. Ricki Tacdol's single scored two runs and Darian Godfrey's single scored two more, though two of the four runs were unearned due to fielding errors after the hits.

Pardoski followed a Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) triple with an RBI single in the sixth before the last four Raiders at bat went down in order. Kelli Peckham earned the complete-game victory for Northwest.

Randall, Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) and Pardoski singled consecutively to start Game 2, resulting in Pardoski's RBI, a Megan Scherer (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) RBI single and an Ontiveros sacrifice fly. Pardoski's two-run shot over the center field fence made it 5-0 in the second.

That was just enough breathing room for Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda), who struck out four and allowed four runs in four innings for the win. Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) pitched three innings of one-hit relief with six punch-outs for the save.

Scherer added a run-scoring double in the seventh inning, and Ontiveros followed that with a two-run bomb – the first of her season.

Pardoski is now tied for the team lead with three home runs.

Kayla Douglas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman) went 3-for-4 with a double in the second game for SOU.

SOU's scheduled doubleheader at Concordia on Saturday has been postponed due to rain and moved to be played in Eugene on March 24. That will push SOU's home doubleheader against Oregon Tech to March 25.

The Raiders are next in action at Corban next Friday.
