Bricker guides Raiders to split against 10th-ranked Simpson

ASHLAND – Another unyielding outing from pitcher Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) helped the Southern Oregon softball team end its skid against 10th-ranked Simpson (Calif.) and earn a split with a 5-2 win in the second half of a twin bill Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Bricker went to 8-2 on the season with her fifth complete game – a six-hitter in which she didn't allow a run until four straight Redhawks reached with two outs in the seventh inning.

That win occurred after SOU's third loss in a row to Simpson, a 3-2 final that was decided when Ryan Norton singled in Kaylana Mah for the game-winning run with one out in the seventh inning.

The Raiders finished their nonleague slate with a record of 19-9. They'll play an alumni game at 11 a.m. Sunday before diving into Cascade Conference action next Friday and Saturday at Northwest (Wash.) and Concordia (Ore.).

Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) was the tough-luck loser in the opener. She went all seven innings, allowing nine hits and walking two with three strikeouts.

Paris Hallums, who pitched 17 innings without allowing an earned run in her three previous appearances against the Raiders, won it with a four-hitter. SOU ended her streak in the first inning as Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch, and the Raiders went up 2-1 in the fifth when Tyler Burke (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) reached on an error and was doubled in on a two-out liner by Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage).

Simpson tied it in the fifth, as Taylor Hill led off with a double and Mah drove her in with a single that didn't leave the infield, but Craig avoided further damage by stranding three runners. In the seventh, Missy Silveira led off with a single and was sacrificed over, setting up Norton's RBI.

Randall led off the bottom of the seventh with her second hit but never got past first base. Megan Winton (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior) also doubled in the game.

In Game 2, SOU scored five times in the first three innings, though only two of the runs Kacey Pokorny allowed were earned. The first unearned run was Randall, who reached on an error and scored on Winton's bloop single.

Gina Ayala (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe) ripped a two-out RBI single in the second, and the Raiders went up 3-0 in the third when Randall singled and Gonzalez doubled her home. A throwing error immediately brought in the next run, and Kristin Ahern (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Rosary) completed the rally with an RBI single to score Winton.

Gonzalez went 2-for-2 in the game and Randall scored twice.

Bricker struck out three. She's yielded two earned runs or less in eight of 10 starts this season.
