Pardoski provides pop as SOU helps playoff cause with sweep of NCU

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's long road to the .500 mark in Cascade Conference play came to a happy close Friday at University Field with a sweep of Northwest Christian, simultaneously strengthening the Raiders' hold on the fourth and final playoff spot.

The Raiders (29-19 overall, 10-10 CCC) defeated the Beacons, with whom they started the day tied in the loss column, 4-3 and 9-0. They were gifted three unearned runs in the fifth inning of the opener, but needed no such help in Game 2 as Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork) went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and five RBIs and Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) had three hits and scored three runs in a five-inning affair.

SOU pitchers Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) and Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) were mostly untouchable, limiting the Beacons (10-27, 7-12) to two hits in each contest. Craig yielded one earned run in her 13th complete game to improve to 13-5, and Bricker zipped through her first career shutout while allowing four baserunners to go to 12-7.

The Raiders will play their final home games of the season – and their 13th and 14th in 16 days – when 23rd-ranked Corban visits Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

In Game 1, SOU tapped Beacons starter for 11 hits (Randall again had three of them) but stranded 11 runners, scoring early only when Randall followed Megan Winton (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior)'s second-inning double with an RBI single.

The Beacons cashed in on a Raider error with Addy Hoskins's RBI groundout in the third and grabbed a 2-1 lead when Parker Bonife jacked a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Pardoski led off SOU's fifth with a walk and Megan Scherer (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) followed her onto the bases thanks to a dropped popup. Winton's misplayed grounder tied the game, a successful first-and-third steal play gave the Raiders the lead, and Randall's infield hit made it 4-2.

Anita Singh's fielder's choice RBI was the result of another SOU error in the sixth, but Craig closed the Beacons out.

There were no wasted opportunities in Game 2, which Pardoski kicked off by hitting a two-run double in the first inning. Ally Painter (La Palma, Calif./St. Joseph) laced a two-run single in the second, and Pardoski delivered the centerpiece of the six-run frame with her fourth homer of the season – a three-run shot to left field that made the lead 8-0.

Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) scored twice and added an RBI in the contest.

Bricker struck out two and walked two, needing 54 pitches to finish off the Beacons in 61 minutes.

SOU won the season series against NCU, 3-1.
