Gonzalez, Raiders spoil Concordia's title hopes

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – The last doubleheader of the regular season didn't hold much meaning for the Southern Oregon softball team, and the Raiders took the fun out of it for 15th-ranked Concordia, too.

Trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning of the opener, Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage)'s three-run homer and go-ahead single keyed a rally that made the Raiders 7-5 winners Friday afternoon at Hood View Park. The Cavaliers won Game 2, 6-0, but the damage was already done.

Concordia needed a sweep to tie Oregon Tech for the Cascade Conference's regular season title. Either way, though, the Cavs (40-14 overall, 21-7 CCC) were locked into the No. 2 seed for the Cascade/Frontier Conference tournament, which will take place next Friday through Sunday in Klamath Falls.

Corban is the No. 3 seed, Great Falls (Mont.) is No. 4 and SOU is No. 5. The Raiders will open the double-elimination tournament at 9 a.m. Friday against Great Falls, with the winner playing Oregon Tech at 2 p.m. and the loser playing either Concordia or Corban at 4:30 p.m.

SOU completed the regular season with a record of 32-24 and 13-15 in the circuit.

In the opener, Taylor Bussey's two-run homer put the Cavs up five in the fourth inning before a rain delayed stalled their momentum in the fifth.

The Raiders made their move in the sixth, scoring first on a throwing error that brought home Cortney Nolan (Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls) and put Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) on base. Two batters later, Gonzalez's fifth homer of the year made it 5-4.

With two on and one out in the seventh, Randall slapped an RBI single to the opposite field that tied it. Gonzalez came to the plate with the bases loaded and knocked a two-run single to right field.

Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) allowed eight hits and three earned runs in a complete-game win, improving to 14-7.

Randall broke nine-year-old SOU single-season records for hits (82) and runs (53) in the contest.

In Game 2, Mariah Jiminez hit a first-inning grand slam and Destinee Chang added a solo shot in the third. Mattie Boucher pitched the shutout, striking out five and allowing three hits.
