SOU staves off elimination with farewell upset of Concordia

KLAMATH FALLS – Southern Oregon still has a pulse after the first day of the Cascade Conference Softball Championships presented by U.S. Bank thanks to a 6-5 upset of 16th-ranked Concordia in the tournament's first elimination game.

The fifth-seeded Raiders (33-25 overall) started Friday with a 4-3 loss to fourth-seeded Great Falls (Mont.). Trailing 3-0, they tied the game with three runs in the fifth inning, but Mindy Larson's one-out single in the seventh brought home Chloe Cross for the game-winning run.

SOU fell behind 3-1 after four innings against second-seeded Concordia. The Cavs – who earlier in the day lost a 9-0 lead in an 11-9 loss to third-seeded Corban – surrendered three runs in the fifth as Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) singled home Cortney Nolan (Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls), Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork)'s groundout scored Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord), and Gina Ayala (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe) plated Gonzalez for the go-ahead run with a single. Both teams scored twice in the sixth and the Cavs put the potential tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) retired three straight to end it.

The Raiders will play another elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Great Falls, which was defeated 3-2 by Oregon Tech in its second game.

Randall went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in the win. Gonzalez had two hits, Ayala had two hits and two RBIs and Nolan added two hits and a run scored.

Making her first start in nearly a month, Sydney White (Clovis, Calif./Clovis West) delivered five strong innings in which she allowed just two earned runs and six hits. She got the win in what will go down as the final game SOU will play as a conference rival of Concordia's, which is moving on to the NCAA Division II level next season. Craig, who came on with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, yielded one hit for the save.

Craig threw a complete game against Great Falls, which got a complete game of its own out of Keeley Van Blaricom. Larson's two-run double in the third and Morgan Robinson's RBI triple in the fourth gave the Argos the initial edge.

SOU rallied in the fifth, set up by Ayala's infield single and a Kayla Douglas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman) double. Randall drove home the first run with a single and Douglas scored on a first-and-third steal before Ally Painter (La Palma, Calif./St. Joseph)'s two-out RBI single tied it.

After Larson drove home the go-ahead run for Great Falls, Van Blaricon induced three groundouts in the seventh to close out the win.

Gonzalez and Ayala led SOU with two hits apiece.

The Raiders will need to win at least three more and possibly four to take the tourney title. If they get by the Argos, they'll play the loser of Saturday morning's game between Oregon Tech and Corban at 4 p.m.
