No. 16 SOU notches program's 1,000th win in sweep of Merced

MERCED, Calif. – It took about 46 years for the Southern Oregon University volleyball program to compile its first 999 wins but just over an hour to get No. 1,000, as the Raiders took care of California Merced in straight sets Friday night at the U.C. Merced Invitational.

Thirty-six of 16th-ranked SOU's 45 kills were taken care of by Tyana Andrews (16), Emma Gasman (10) and Corynn Kopra (10) in the 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 victory over the Bobcats. The Raiders extended their best start since 1997, improving to 5-0 on the young season.

They also became just the 10th NAIA program to reach the 1,000-win mark, and the only one west of Kansas.

Andrews was particularly effective in this one, doing her work on just 29 attacks for a .517 average. The Raiders hit a season-best .303 as a team while Merced was stymied at .054.

They benefited from another stellar night out of setter Lauren McGowne, whose 39 assists equaled the second-most of her career in three-set matches. She also had eight digs, while Kopra and Ashlyn Flynn tied for team-high honors with 13.

Laura Morse contributed five kills and eight digs, and Gasman was in on four of SOU's six blocks.

The Bobcats (0-1) were paced by Jade Fachin's nine kills, though she needed 39 attacks to get there.

SOU plays at 11 a.m. Saturday against Menlo and at 5 p.m. against William Jessup. The latter replaced San Diego Christian on the original schedule.
