McArthur's no-look header gives SOU double-OT win over Owls

ASHLAND – On a night that was just as unusual as the goal that ended it, the Southern Oregon women's soccer team found another way to win.

Senior forward Megan McArthur knocked in a header with her back to the goal in the 107th minute Thursday night, preserving first-place SOU's perfect Cascade Conference record in a 1-0 win over Oregon Tech at Raider Stadium.

Playing through a torrential downpour and howling wind from start to finish, the Raiders (10-3-1 overall, 7-0 CCC) were unable to generate many quality chances and two of them bounced off the crossbar – Lisa Elledge's free kick in the first half and Maddy Spangler's header in the second.

Finally, with 3:56 left on the clock in the second overtime period, Serena Robertson's pass from the corner was deflected to Facienne Graham near the top of the box. She pitched it high to McArthur, who, without looking, guided the ball out of OIT keeper Megan Green's reach inside the left post.

The Owls dropped to 3-10-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference.

SOU has shut out all seven of its CCC opponents. The seven-match win streak is tied for the longest in team history.

The Raiders dominated possession while OIT played defensively, staking to a 26-4 advantage in shots and putting 10 on goal. Still, they dragged on the dampened artificial turf and their usually sharp and measured style of play was difficult to execute, resulting in several compromised shots.

When it mattered most, though, McArthur came through again.

The goal was her ninth of the season – she's scored in all seven home games – and 20th of her career. She's the fifth Raider to ever reach that four-year total.

This one was no doubt the latest goal of the 20; it hit the net just as the clock hit 10:42 p.m.

The Raiders completed the regular-season sweep of OIT, having already defeated them, 3-1, on Aug. 20 in Klamath Falls.
