Carroll stops SOU with overtime PK, remains in title picture

HELENA, Mont. – Southern Oregon's path to a Cascade Conference regular-season title got a little more complicated Friday afternoon when the Carroll Saints interjected with some plans of their own and defeated the Raiders 1-0 in overtime at Nelson Stadium.

In the 96th minute, Carroll's Natalie Johnston delivered the golden goal on a penalty kick. It was the first goal SOU (10-4-1 overall, 7-1 CCC) has allowed in conference play and significantly bolstered the repeat hopes of the Saints (11-3-3, 8-0-3).

With eight wins and three ties, Carroll finished its regular season with 27 points in the standings. The Raiders are at 21 points but have three games left to play, which means they'll need three wins or two wins and a tie to surpass the Saints and win their first conference championship.

Their first shot is Saturday in a 12:30 Pacific Time match at Great Falls, which improved to 3-6-1 in the CCC Friday with a 2-0 victory over Oregon Tech. On Oct. 28-29, SOU hosts College of Idaho (3-4-1 CCC) and Rocky Mountain (4-3).

The CCC's regular-season champion gets the conference's first automatic bid to the 32-team NAIA Championships, in which SOU has never appeared. The second automatic bid will be awarded through the conference tournament, Nov. 4-7 in Springfield.

Carroll – the CCC's defending regular-season and tournament champion – has not been defeated in 13 games, improving to 10-0-3 since the beginning of September.

Meanwhile, SOU's streak of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal against an NAIA team ended at 945 minutes.

Raider keeper Kylie Moltzen did her best to preserve it by corralling eight saves, including five in the first half and two in overtime.

Johnston got her shot to win it, though, when SOU was whistled for a hand-ball inside the box.

Jamie Carter was credited for Carroll's shutout. She made a pair of saves in each half.

The Raiders had won seven straight road games dating back to last season. They were also defeated twice by the Saints last year – 3-0 at Raider Stadium and 2-0 in the CCC tournament semifinals.
