No. 7 Mountaineers extend home streak against Raiders

LA GRANDE – The Southern Oregon volleyball team didn't go down without a fight Friday night at seventh-ranked Eastern Oregon but couldn't get over the hump in the third set of a 25-17, 25-18, 28-26 loss at Quinn Coliseum.

Though the Raiders' (14-10 overall, 11-6 Cascade Conference) five-match win streak was snapped, they held the Mountaineers (24-2, 17-1) to their lowest home attacking average of the season at .191. SOU only hit .091, though, and was victimized by 12 blocks.

Makayla Lindburg recorded 13 kills and seven digs and Madisen Garlie had 11 kills and nine blocks for the Mountaineers, who have won 43 straight conference home matches dating back to 2012.

The Raiders were led by Emma Gasman's 10 kills, but the senior middle got all of EOU's attention at the net and committed 11 attacking errors as a result. Courtney Macklin contributed eight kills and three blocks, Nila Lukens and Ariana Sattler had seven kills apiece, Lauren McGowne went for 31 assists and Ashlyn Flynn recorded a match-high 18 digs.

SOU dropped to fifth place in the standings, a half-game behind College of Idaho (12-6 CCC), which it visits Saturday at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

After two convincing opening sets, the Mountaineers led 22-17 in the third before the Raiders rattled off an 8-2 run to take a 25-24 lead. EOU answered with consecutive Lindburg kills, and Gasman forced another tie. Lindburg and Kasaundra Tuma kills ended the match.

SOU attacked at an average of .178 in the third frame after opening at .024 and .057.
