Raiders cruise in season-opening win over Simpson

ASHLAND Ben DeSaulnier picked up where he left off last season and a handful of freshmen started their careers on a high note in Southern Oregon's 91-64 win against Simpson (Calif.) on Saturday night at Mountain Avenue Gym.

DeSaulnier, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, scored 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting and added three steals. His backcourt mates – sophomore point guard Tristen Holmes (10 assists, nine points, five rebounds) and sophomore Kenny Meyer (11 points, four assists, two steals) – also started strong in helping the Raiders shoot 52 percent from the field, including an 18-of-32 showing in the first half.

Among the eight freshmen who debuted for the Raiders, 6-foot-9 New Zealander Jordan Hunt impressed with 15 points and six boards, Conor Carroll provided 10 points and three rebounds off the bench and Jason Simmrin added six points and five steals.

The Raiders missed their first six field-goal attempts but promptly went on a 25-6 run sparked by 3-pointers from Holmes and Hunt. Their lead was never smaller than 10 points the rest of the way, as they picked on Simpson in transition with a 21-2 advantage.

DeSaulnier scored 14 in the first half and 13 in the second, knocking down four of SOU's 10 3-pointers.

Simpson was led by Josh Brakee's 15 points and 16 rebounds inside. The Redhawks shot 45 percent but made just two 3-pointers and went 8 of 18 at the free-throw line.

The Raiders and Redhawks will match up again on Friday and Redding. SOU then returns home on Sunday, Nov. 6, for a 2 p.m. game against Cal Maritime.
