SOU fights back, falls in four at No. 24 Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The 24th-ranked Northwest Eagles completed a regular-season sweep of Southern Oregon on Friday night, claiming a 25-12, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23 decision at NU Pavilion.

The Raiders (9-9 overall, 6-5 Cascade Conference) were unable to generate any momentum in the first two sets, but they never trailed after 1-0 in the third and went blow for blow with the Eagles (12-4, 9-2) in a fourth frame that was tied at 15 points.

Down 22-20, SOU knotted the score with Ariana Sattler's kill and a block by her and Courtney Macklin. The Raiders gave up the next point on a service error, but Macklin tied it at 23-all with a kill. NU's Mattie Jo Johnson responded with a kill, and the outcome was clinched on the next point when Lauren McGowne was whistled for a bad set trying to bring back a ball that was headed over the net.

Johnson, Amanda Waterman and Dakota Adams had nine kills apiece for the Eagles, who hit .260 as a team. Leia Roy had 18 digs, and Morgan Pilon passed out 37 assists.

Emma Gasman (12 kills), Sattler (10) and Taylor Ristvedt (8) led the Raiders in kills. McGowne and Ashlyn Flynn totaled match-highs of 40 assists and 25 digs, respectively, and Natalie James picked up 10 digs.

The Raiders hit .043 in the first two sets and .278 in the last two, ending at .163 for the night.

Both teams were sloppy in service: Northwest committed 14 service errors and SOU 10.

The Raiders will try to stop a three-match skid at 5 p.m. Saturday against Evergreen.
