Raiders pull away from La Sierra, go to 4-1

KLAMATH FALLS – Southern Oregon's outing against La Sierra (Calif.) on Friday afternoon was its shakiest of the young season, but it resulted in an 83-68 win in the first game of the Midland Empire Classic.

Junior guard Ben DeSaulnier scored 13 of his 22 points in the first eight minutes of the second half, helping the Raiders (4-1 overall) keep the Golden Eagles (0-6) at arm's length on a day when they shot just 41 percent from the field, their lowest clip of the season.

Tristen Holmes kept the Raiders afloat in the first half, where he made all four of his shots, including a pair from beyond the arc, and scored 12 of his 14 points. Freshman forward Tate Hoffman added 16 points and five rebounds, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range, and freshman forward Jason Simmrin put up career-highs of nine points and nine boards off the bench.

Hoffman has gone 8-for-10 from outside while averagine 12.7 points in SOU's last three games.

He started the day with a 3-pointer, but the Raiders battled foul trouble and lethargy in misfiring on 23 of 36 shots the rest of the half. It was 31-31 when Holmes made back-to-back triples, and Hoffman poured in another to make it 42-34 at halftime.

SOU took its biggest lead at 61-46 when DeSaulnier scored his final points on a 3 with 11:41 to go. It'd later expand to 19 points, 76-57, when Hoffman capped his day with a jumper with 4:41 left.

Jordan Hunt contributed nine points on 4-of-8 shooting and four rebounds, while Kerry Cook had five points, four boards and two assists off the bench.

The Raiders made 15 of 33 attempts in the second half, still well below their season average. They hadn't shot worse than 52 percent in any of their first four games.

La Sierra, which shot 36 percent (26 of 72), was led by Reynaldo Solorzano's 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Outside of his efforts, the Golden Eagles shot 17 of 60.

They'll finish play at the Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday against William Jessup (Calif.), which came into the tournament with a 5-1 record and appeared in the NAIA Division I tournament last season.
