Durand, Mullings boost SOU to win against Simpson

KLAMATH FALLS Autumn Durand recorded her ninth career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Sydney Mullings scored eight of her 17 in the fourth quarter, and second-ranked Southern Oregon avoided an upset with a 77-63 defeat of Simpson (Calif.) Friday in the Midland Empire Classic.

Mullings went 8-for-10 from the field with eight rebounds on her career-best day and helped the Raiders (2-1 overall) hold off the Redhawks after they trimmed the deficit to 65-59 midway through the fourth.

Majerle Reeves rediscovered her shooting stroke with five 3-pointers in the first half, including one right before the break to put the Raiders up 44-29. She had 16 points, and Demi Sahlinger balanced the box score with eight points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals.

The Redhawks (2-6) outscored the Raiders 20-14 in the third quarter with the help of SOU's 0-for-7 showing from downtown.

The Raiders' shooting struggles continued in the fourth, but their defense came through: With the lead down to six points, they held Simpson to one bucket in the final five minutes.

After an SOU miss, the Raiders pressured rebounder Esther Wofford and Tiani Bradford pried the ball away and dumped it off to Durand for a layup to make it 67-59.

After Fallon Greenshaw's miss on the other end, the Raiders got out in transition and Sahlinger lobbed to a wide-open Mullings for another layup. When the lead got back down to eight, Mullings muscled her way into a short shot off the backboard that pushed the lead to 71-61 with 1:45 left.

The Raiders shot 36 percent from the field (26 of 72) but committed just 13 turnovers and forced 20, which they turned into 23 points.

Simpson, which two weeks ago upset No. 20 Oregon Tech, got 16 points from Greenhaw.

The Raiders will wrap up play at the Classic at 1 p.m. Saturday against California Maritime, which lost 59-37 Friday to Oregon Tech.
