SOU eliminated in penalty kicks by Carroll

SPRINGFIELD – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team got a fittingly excruciating introduction to postseason play late Friday night when it was sent home by Carroll (Mont.) after eight rounds of penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Conference tournament at Mike Kelly Field.

Following 110 minutes of scoreless action, the Saints converted six PKs to SOU's five to move on. Tied 4-4 after the first five chances for both teams, Carroll's James Lamont hit the crossbar, giving SOU a chance to seal the outcome. Carroll keeper Bernhardt Di Cino guessed correctly, though, when he dived to his left to get a hand on Ahmon Afenegus' ensuing shot to keep the Saints alive.

Carroll's Braden Wall and SOU's Takoda Daubel then exchanged makes. Dylan Allen started the eighth round with a conversion, and Di Cino guessed right again when he lunged to the same spot to stop Roberto Lupera's attempt and trigger the celebration.

The Raiders, who came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed, completed their second season with a record of 11-3-3.

The fifth-seeded Saints (10-8-1) will play at 8 p.m. Saturday against second-seeded Corban. Top-seeded Rocky Mountain plays sixth-seeded Great Falls in the other semifinal.

Regulation and overtime were mostly futile exercises for both teams in the physical affair. Neither team put a shot on goal in the first half or the extra sessions, and SOU had a 3-1 advantage in the second half with a 13-5 edge in total shots for the game.

The shutout was the Raiders' ninth of the season. It was also the first time they failed to score all year. They won the first matchup against Carroll on Oct. 21 in Helena, 3-1.

Since losing four of seven games during the middle chunk of their schedule, the Saints have gone 4-1-1.
