Raiders cool off fast, go down at 13th-ranked Northwest Christian

EUGENE – A night after canning their first eight 3-point attempts in a Cascade Conference win at Corban, Southern Oregon was eventually betrayed by its shooting touch Saturday following another hot start at Northwest Christian.

The Raiders made seven of their first nine 3-pointers but missed their next 12 en route to an 86-62 loss to the 13th-ranked Beacons inside the Morse Events Center. And while SOU (7-5 overall, 1-1 CCC) ran out of answers outside, 7-foot center Kylor Kelley controlled the paint area with an NCU record nine blocked shots.

Hunter Bradford's bucket-and-one with 7:36 left in the first half gave SOU a 29-25 lead, but the Raiders went the rest of the half without a field goal and trailed 38-35 going into the break.

Brendy Taylor, a senior transfer who came to the Beacons via USC and Santa Clara, scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, where NCU went 6-for-7 from downtown and ended the game on an 18-4 run.

The Beacons improved to 8-1 and 2-0 in the CCC.

Ben DeSaulnier's 14 points led the Raiders. He was held to four points in the second half, and Conor Carroll scored all 11 of his points in the first half on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Hunter Bradford added nine points and Justin Martin scored eight.

SOU was credited with just seven assists on its 20-of-56 performance from the field, matching its lowest total of the season.

NCU shot 53 percent from the floor (33-of-63), also getting 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals from point guard Kenny Blackwell and 16 off the bench from Anthony Walker.

The Raiders return home next Saturday and Saturday for the first time in over a month to host Evergreen State and Northwest (Wash.). Both games tip off at 3 p.m.
