No. 4 Biola wears down Raiders to stay perfect

FULLERTON, Calif. – The fourth-ranked Biola (Calif.) Eagles lived up to their billing Friday night and wore down Southern Oregon inside to the tune of a 78-61 win at the Hope International Invitational.

The Raiders (6-3 overall) led 30-27 after Tate Hoffman's layup 16 minutes into the game, but Biola went into halftime on a 14-2 run and remained comfortably ahead due in large part to a 50-16 advantage on points in the paint.

The Eagles, members of the NAIA Division I Golden State Athletic Conference, shot 53 percent (29-of-55) and ran their record to 9-0. Dakari Archer totaled half of his game-high 20 points at the free-throw line and Jeff Gonzalez shot 8-of-9 to register 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

They shut down Ben DeSaulnier, SOU's top scorer, who went 1-of-5 from the field and finished with six points – his lowest total in 25 games dating back to last season. Kenny Meyer scored 12 points and Tate Hoffman had 11, but Tristen Holmes (four points) was also held to single digits for the first time since the season opener.

The Raiders, still without starting forward Hunter Bradford, kept pace early from the 3-point line – hitting five on their way to that 30-27 edge – and made 10 of their 29 attempts overall. Hoffman made three while Meyer and Justin Martin had two apiece.

The meeting was the first between the teams since the 1974-75 season.

SOU will take on 17th-ranked Hope International at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
