Fast start propels SOU to 69-60 win at Corban

SALEM – Fifth-ranked Southern Oregon picked up Friday right where it left off last year in the Cascade Conference with a 69-60 win over Corban at the C.E. Jeffers Center.

As was often the case during their championship season, it was one big early run that put the Raiders (7-1 overall, 1-0 CCC) in control and the Warriors (6-3, 0-1) on their heels. Trailing 7-4 a few minutes into the game, they assembled a 16-2 spurt by punishing Corban in transition and were comfortably ahead for the rest of the night.

Autumn Durand shot 9-of-16 for 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals – her third straight game with 20-plus points and fifth double-double in six outings. Behind her work inside, the Raiders scored 50 points in the paint – including all 24 in the first quarter – and 21 on second-chance buckets.

Casey Williams put together her best night as a Raider with 11 points and 12 rebounds, becoming SOU's fourth player to record a double-double this year. Tiani Bradford had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Toria Bradford added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Raiders had 10 steals as a team, marking their sixth consecutive game in double digits. Both teams shot only 39 percent from the field, but SOU got up 21 more attempts thanks in part to its 23-9 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Corban, which was led by Maddey Pflaumer's 17 points and seven rebounds and Sadie Pilgram's 15 and seven, became the seventh opponent in a row unable to crack 40-percent shooting against the Raiders.

The win was SOU's sixth straight against Corban and fifth straight in Salem.

After their early run, the Raiders never led by fewer than eight points until Hannah Shore's 3-pointer with 3:24 remaining that made it 63-56. Demi Sahlinger promptly answered with a pull-up jumper in the lane.

The Raiders play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Northwest Christian, which was a 67-64 winner over Oregon Tech in overtime Friday.
