Raiders win two more to stay perfect at NAIA So Cal Classic

WEST COVINA, Calif. – The Southern Oregon University softball team heated up at the plate Saturday and defeated two more quality opponents at the NAIA Southern California Classic to run its winning streak to five games.

A day after pulling off two upsets of ranked teams, the Raiders (10-4 overall) knocked off Hope International (Calif.), 12-3, and San Diego Christian (Calif.), 12-3. If they can complete an unbeaten run at the Classic on Sunday against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 10 a.m. and La Sierra (Calif.) at noon, they'll have their longest winning streak in seven years.

SOU totaled 20 hits in the wins, making it the most offensively productive day of the season, but also got solid complete-game outings from starters Kayla Spini and Lacie Crawford.

The Raiders took advantage of six Hope International errors in the opener, including four in the first two innings that led to four unearned runs. Aaliyah Oliver started her big day by going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Kelsey Randall went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Seven different Raiders drove in runs in the game. Emma Paranto hit a two-run single in the fifth, Jazmin Ruvalcaba hit a two-run single in the sixth, and Tiana Brown came around to score after her pinch-hit double.

For her part, Spini, a junior transfer, earned her first win as a Raider by allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six innings. She walked three and struck out one.

Crawford went to 2-1 with her win against San Diego Christian. She walked five but yielded just four hits with two strikeouts, and the Raiders had a 2-0 lead by the time she gave up SDC's only run in the fourth.

Alexa Gonzalez put the Raiders up with an RBI groundout in the first that scored Randall, who went 3-for-4 with a leadoff triple. Oliver tacked on another run in the second with a single through the right side that scored Nicole Cardoza.

Randall's single in the fourth plated Tyler Burke to make it 3-1, and Oliver launched her first career home in the sixth – a two-run shot following Cardoza's one-out single, her second of the game.

Gonzalez had her nine-game hitting streak snapped, but Randall extended hers to eight and Kayleen Smith brought hers to five.
