Gonzalez walk-off hit gives SOU split on final day of So. Cal Classic

WEST COVINA, Calif. Alexa Gonzalez's eighth-inning single through the right side drove in Kelsey Randall and made the Southern Oregon softball team a walk-off winner Sunday, 4-3 over La Sierra (Calif.), in the final game of the NAIA Southern California Classic.

The Raiders (11-5 overall) lost 4-3 to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) during the morning session and left the Classic with five wins in six games.

Randall, SOU's All-American sophomore shortstop, extended her hitting streak to 10 games by going 3-for-5 against La Sierra while Gonzalez, Nicole Cardoza and Abigail Lund had two hits apiece.

Lund's bunt single scored Megan Winton and Randall's opposite-field hit scored Taylor Martinez to put SOU up 2-0 in the second inning. Victoria Mackey shut the Eagles out through the first five innings, and Cardoza made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth by driving in Davalin Ontiveros with a single.

La Sierra rallied to send the game to extra innings: Genifer Garbellini cut into the deficit with a solo shot in the sixth, and one-out RBI hits from Berlyn Benavides and Rylie Ruckle tied it in the seventh.

Sydney White relieved Mackey in the eighth and blanked the Eagles to earn the victory despite the use of international tiebreaker rules that allow both teams to start the extra frame with a runner on second. Gonzalez's game-winning hit came with two outs, a play after Tiana Brown was gunned down trying to score.

The Raiders nearly forced extra innings against Embry-Riddle after putting themselves in a 4-0 hole. Lund and Aaliyah Oliver reached on one-out errors in the seventh before Randall singled in Lund and Kayleen Smith stroked a two-out, two-run triple. Taylor Martinez's groundout ended the threat and the game.

Embry-Riddle's Kayla Avram didn't allow an earned run in the contest and had only surrendered three hits and a walk through the first six innings. Kaila Romero's two-run double in the first gave Avram a lead to work with, and RBI singles by Hannah DeLuna and Meghan Hospodka in the third padded it.
