SOU splits slugfests with No. 24 Indiana Wesleyan

ASHLAND – Playing its first home games and final tune-ups before the start of Cascade Conference play, the Southern Oregon University softball team slugged it out with 24th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan in a doubleheader split, winning 8-7 in eight innings and losing 14-8 at University Field.

Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Randall went 5-for-9 on the day and extended her hitting streak to 12 games, while Kayleen Smith went 4-for-8 and brought her hitting streak to nine.

Indiana Wesleyan (2-2 overall) had 21 hits on the day and SOU (12-6) registered 20. But the difference in the first game was IWU's four errors to SOU's zero, and the difference in the second was three IWU two-run home runs.

The Raiders led the opener 6-0 after three innings – plating one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. The scoring included Alexa Gonzalez's RBI double, Taylor Martinez's two-run single and Randall's one-run single.

Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, the Wildcats rallied for three runs; Allison Bexel's infield single scored the first, and Gabby Bogear's two-run single followed. In the seventh, Alex Springer homered to left field with one out to knot the score.

With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth – both teams started their halves of the inning with a runner on second – IWU's Darcella Blakey was sacrificed to third and scored on Bogear's one-out groundout to shortstop. In the bottom half, Emma Paranto sacrificed Martinez to third to bring up Aaliyah Oliver, who singled to left to bring Martinez home and scored on the same play thanks to a three-base error in the outfield.

Victoria Mackey got the win for SOU with 2 2/3 innings of relief work, improving to 7-0. Haley Nixon took the loss in relief, but three of the eight runs IWU allowed were unearned.

However, Springer wasn't done with the Raiders after her Game 1 homer. She took the Raiders deep twice in Game 2, which she started with a two-run single as the Wildcats took a 3-1 lead in the third, and finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Kaisey Carson went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs, a two-run homer in the fourth included. Kelsey Kooistra was also a nuisance, going 2-for-3, stealing four bases and scoring four runs from the bottom of the lineup.

Randall and Smith had three hits apiece, Megan Winton reached base three teams, and Gonzalez and Abigail Lund both had two RBIs for the Raiders.

Between the teams, there were 35 total baserunners in the second game. Kaisey Carson earned the win by going five innings, surrendering three earned runs and six hits and four walks and striking out two.

The Raiders are now 3-1 against top-25 opponents this season. They'll face another on Friday, traveling to 17th-ranked Corban for a CCC-opening twin bill. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
