SOU stays hot with sweep of Carroll in CCC openers

HELENA, Mont. – Reliable defense, solid pitching and timely hitting was the Southern Oregon University softball team's formula for a Cascade Conference-opening sweep Saturday afternoon at Carroll College, 4-2 and 5-3.

The Raiders (14-6 overall) rewarded complete-game efforts by senior Sydney White and freshman Victoria Mackey with their eighth and ninth wins in the last 11 games. Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Randall extended her hitting streak to 14 – two away from matching the SOU record – and junior second baseman Kayleen Smith brought hers to 11 as the team totaled 19 hits, including 13 in the second game.

White, whose record stands at 3-2, delivered perhaps her best outing of the season in the opener, striking out five while allowing seven hits (six singles) and walking one. The Saints (10-12) scored both of their runs in the second inning before SOU took the lead with three in the fourth.

Smith started the rally with a one-out single, which was followed by Nicole Cardoza's walk and a double-steal. Abigail Lund's infield single drove in the first run, Megan Winton's groundout scored the second, and Taylor Martinez's two-out single to center field made it 3-2. The fourth run was tacked on in the seventh, when Jazmin Ruvalcaba doubled and Randall kept her streak alive with an RBI single to center.

Carroll put the potential tying runs on in the bottom of the seventh with a hit and an error before White fielded Madison Soper's grounder and threw her out to end the game.

Mackey improved her record to 8-0 in Game 2, scattering nine hits and a walk by striking out one and inducing 11 groundouts.

The Raiders gave her a lead to work with in a four-run first inning. Randall, Smith, Lund and Alexa Gonzalez had two hits apiece and Tyler Burke went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

In the first, Randall led off with a single and a steal and scored on Smith's one-out squeeze-bunt single. Rebecca Velasquez singled, Lund doubled to make it 2-0, and Burke's two-out, two-run double made it 4-0. After the Saints scored three in the fourth, Burke provided an insurance run in the fifth with a hit that scored Lund, who had reached earlier with an error.

SOU had one error in the first game and none in the second. The Raiders are now 8-0 when they've gone errorless.

They'll remain in Montana on Sunday to face Great Falls, which along with Carroll is in its first year on the CCC schedule.
