Strong starts by White, Spini not enough in opening-day losses

REDDING, Calif. – Promising opening-day starts by pitchers Sydney White and Kayla Spini were not enough Friday afternoon as the Southern Oregon softball team's bats were silenced and defense faltered in 4-0 and 3-2 losses at Simpson.

Simpson's Paris Hallums struck out 12 and held the Raiders to four hits for a complete-game shutout in the opener, and the Redhawks walked off with the winning run on a play that featured two SOU errors in Game 2 to complete a sweep of the twin bill.

While Hallums was shuting down the Raider lineup, White pieced together a formidable start of her own. The senior went six innings, allowed four hits and issued five free passes, but three of the four runs Simpson scorer were unearned.

The Redhawks scored the only Game 1 run they needed in the second inning when, with two outs, Amanda Laughlin's infield single scored Jessica Dager, who had reached base on a fielder's choice following an error. Simpson tacked on three more in the fifth, two of which were unearned, on three singles. Madison Wright went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

In Game 2, the Raiders struck first with two runs in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no outs when Emma Paranto singled and Abigail Lund and Megan Winton reached on bunt singles; Jazmin Ruvalcaba's sacrifice fly and Kelsey Randall's two-out single up the middle got them on the board.

Spini, a junior transfer making her SOU debut, also yielded just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and three walks with no strikeouts. But a Bailey Akins run-scoring single got Simpson its first run in the second, and a two-out error with none on led to the tying run in the third.

In SOU's top half of the seventh inning, Lund hit a one-out single that was erased on an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Spini set down the first two Redhawks in the second half before Melissa Silveira singled. The next batter, Marisa Marmolejo, hit a ball that was mishandled at second base. Silveira broke for home on the play, and the throw to cut her down was on time but mishandled at the plate.

SOU had seven hits in Game 2, led by Lund's two singles. Neither team had an extra-base hit all day.

The Raiders will be in Rocklin, Calif., on Saturday to face William Jessup at 9 a.m. and Holy Names at 11:30 a.m.
