Raiders blank William Jessup, Holy Names for first wins

ROCKLIN, Calif. – A day after getting a pair of quality starts in two opening-day losses, the Southern Oregon softball team's pitching staff revealed its depth Saturday morning in shutouts of William Jessup and Holy Names at Matt Redding Field.

Making their Raider debuts, junior Lacie Crawford tossed a six-hitter in SOU's 4-0 win over William Jessup and freshman Victoria Mackey followed with a four-hitter in SOU's 2-0 defeat of Holy Names. Both went the distance as the Raiders improved to 2-2 overall.

SOU third baseman Alexa Gonzalez had the big blows in both games – a two-run double to break open Game 1 in the fifth inning and the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth inning of Game 2. All-American shortstop Kelsey Randall went 3-for-6 on the day with a stolen base that put her in scoring position before Gonzalez knocked her in.

The story, however, was the pitching. After Sydney White and Kayla Spini combined to give up just two earned runs in 12 2/3 innings during Friday's losses at Simpson, Crawford and Mackey gave the Raiders back-to-back shutouts for the first time since March 11, 2006.

And after committing six errors Friday that led to five unearned runs, the Raider defense didn't commit any Saturday for the first time since last March.

Crawford struck out six and walked two Warriors. She finally got some help in the fourth inning when Kayleen Smith hit a leadoff single to center, advanced to second on an error, advanced to third on a Taylor Martinez flyout and scored on an Abigail Lund groundout.

With two on and two outs in the fifth, Gonzalez blasted her double to center and it scored Jazmin Ruvalcaba – who had two hits in the game – and Kaelynn Miller, who went 1-for-2. Smith came through next with her second single to score Gonzalez.

Mackey made full use of her defense against the Hawks, scattering five hits and a walk without a strikeout. The Raiders scored both of their runs in the fourth: Randall and Gonzalez had back-to-back hits to score the first, and Smith's fielder's choice brought Gonzalez in for the second.

Holy Names brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh with a leadoff single, but Mackey induced three straight groundouts to end it.

The Raiders will return to California next Friday and Saturday for the Simpson University Tournament in Redding.
