REDDING, Calif. – Freshman pitcher Victoria Mackey picked up one win in relief and another with a complete game as the Southern Oregon University softball team went 2-1 Friday on the first of two days at the Simpson Invitational.

The Raiders (5-3 overall) started the day with a 5-4 win over Menlo (Calif.), coming back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. They lost to Simpson (Calif.), 12-1, in a game that ended after five innings due to the mercy rule, then rode Mackey's five-hitter to a 3-1 victory over Saint Katherine (Calif.).

Alexa Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs against Menlo. Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Mackey entered in a bases-loaded, one-out jam and induced an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom half of the inning, SOU set the table with consecutive singles by Megan Winton, Jazmin Ruvalcaba and Tyler Burke. Kelsey Randall's groundout brought in the first run, and Gonzalez came up next with a triple that drove in two runs. An error on the play allowed Gonzalez to score, giving the Raiders the lead.

Mackey shut the door in the seventh. The Oaks put the tying run before Mackey induced one more double play to end the game.

In Simpson's 12-1 win, the Raiders allowed nine hits, walked eight and committed two errors. Bailey Akins hit a three-run homer in the Redhawks' half of the first inning and ended up with six RBIs, and Kaylana Mah went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.

The Raiders bounced back quickly in their 3-1 win against Saint Katherine. They scored twice in the first inning when Randall led off with a triple, Kayleen Smith tripled her home and Smith scored on a first-and-third steal play. SOU tacked on one more run in the fifth when Randall led off a double, stole third and was squeezed home by Gonzalez.

Gonzalez and Aaliyah Oliver joined Randall with two hits apiece in the game.

But Mackey was the story, allowing just five hits and striking out eight with one walk. She improved to 3-0 on the season with her second complete game.

The Raiders will face Saint Katherine against at 9 a.m. Saturday, then round out their tournament schedule with William Jessup at 3:30 p.m. and Simpson at 6 p.m.
