SOU wins two of three on final day of Simpson Invitational

REDDING, Calif. – For the second day in a row, the Southern Oregon University softball team went 2-1 Saturday at the Simpson Invitational.

The Raiders (6-4 overall) started the day with a 9-1 win against Saint Katherine (Calif.) by busting open a tie game with six runs in the fourth inning to give pitcher Sydney White a complete-game victory. After dropping the afternoon game 10-0 to William Jessup (Calif.), they ended a three-game losing streak to Simpson (Calif.) with a 4-1 win as freshman Victoria Mackey went the distance to improve to 4-0 on the season.

SOU registered 10 hits in the opener. Alexa Gonzalez hit a three-run double to cap the six-run fourth inning, while Kelsey Randall had two RBIs and a run scored, Kayleen Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and nine Raiders had base hits in all as they ended the game by the letter of the the mercy rule after five innings.

White allowed just three hits and walked two with two strikeouts.

In the 10-0 loss to William Jessup Kyla Cisneros went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, Kaylee Surrell homered and Jessica Meyers scattered four singles with four strikeouts for the five-inning shutout.

Mackey yielded just three hits and struck out six in the 4-1 win over Simpson, throwing her third complete game and earning her third victory in two days.

The Raiders broke a scoreless game open with three runs in the third inning. After Aaliyah Oliver singled and Randall reached on an error to start the inning, Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly and Smith hit an RBI single. The final run scored on Amelia Hensler's run-scoring single, and the Raiders tacked on one more in the fifth when Hensley knocked in Smith with another single.

SOU will be in action next weekend at the Biola Invitational in West Covina, Calif.
