Raiders pull off upsets of No. 18 Vanguard, No. 20 Biola

WEST COVINA, Calif. – Southern Oregon's first two home runs of the season accounted for all of its offense and were just enough for the Raiders to earn a signature win Friday at the NAIA Southern Cal Classic, 3-2 over 18th-ranked Vanguard.

For good measure, SOU made it one of the most successful resume-building days in team history with a 3-2 upset of 20th-ranked Biola, the tournament host, in eight innings a couple hours later. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect – both teams started the extra frame with a runner on second base – Kayleen Smith sacrificed Alexa Gonzalez to third base, and Taylor Martinez drove her in with a groundout to second for the walk-off win.

The Raiders went to 8-4 overall and have now won six of their last eight.

Freshman pitcher Victoria Mackey kept up her outstanding start by picking up both decisions to move to 6-0, throwing two innings relief in the opener and going all eight against Biola.

The Raiders totaled just five hits against Vanguard, but the first was Megan Winton's two-run blast after Amelia Hensler's one-out walk in the second inning. Hensler took her turn leading off the top of the seventh inning, depositing Alexandra Olvera's pitch over the fence to break a 2-2 tie.

Mackey shut the door in the seventh. She took over for Sydney White with two on and no outs in the fifth and immediately gave up the game-tying single before preserving the tie with three straight outs, then retired three straight after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh.

White made a quality start, allowing just three hits in five innings with one strikeout. Winton reached base all three times up, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

In eight innings against Biola, Mackey scattered eight hits, struck out five and walked two. The Raiders gave her a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Kelsey Randall singled, Smith drove her in with a two-out triple and Martinez chased home one more run by reaching on an error.

Biola didn't tie it until there were two outs and Heather Hall hit a sacrifice fly.

Mackey didn't budge in the eighth. After Biola sacrificed its automatic runner from second to third, Mackey induced a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat.

SOU continues play at the Classic on Saturday, at 10 a.m. against Hope International and 4 p.m. against San Diego Christian.
