No. 23 Corban sweeps No. 16 Raiders, 9-4 and 2-1

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – The last leg of the Southern Oregon University softball team's weeklong road trip will have the Raiders especially happy to be home this weekend.

Playing with a top-25 ranking for the first time in 10 years, No. 16 SOU absorbed two blows Wednesday afternoon from the No. 23 Corban Warriors – 9-4 and 2-1 in Cascade Conference play at Hood View Park.

The Warriors (19-10 overall, 5-3 CCC) poked three home runs in the first three innings of Game 1 and scored twice in the sixth inning of Game 2 to overcome four errors and reward Allie Mendez's complete-game four hitter.

The Raiders (15-9, 3-3) didn't commit an error in either game – they'd previously been 8-0 in games without an error – but were tattooed in the first and produced just four singles in the second.

SOU starter Sydney White, who had allowed two runs over 14 innings in a pair of wins over the weekend, took the first loss and was down 3-0 before recording her first out as Iris Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the first inning. In the third, Raina Reece hit a two-run shot with one out and Raimee Sluder made it back-to-back with a solo blast.

Rodriguez went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, four RBIs and two runs scored. For the Raiders, Kayleen Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, Kelsey Randall went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Megan Winton was 2-for-4.

In Game 2, Smith went 1-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 15 games – one short of matching SOU's team record. During a scoreless game in the fourth inning, she led off by reaching on an error and took second with one of her three steals. The next batter, Rebecca Velasquez, drove her Smith in with a single up the middle.

Freshman pitcher Victoria Mackey, who came in with a record of 8-0, was working on a three-hit shutout going into the bottom of the sixth. But the Warriors strung together four hits in the frame, and Sluder's groundout plated Maddy Melton for the tying run. With two outs, Grace Utto-Garlarneau stroked a single through the left side to score Rodriguez and make it 2-1.

The Raiders put the tying run on in the seventh thanks to Corban's fourth error but were unable to capitalize. Mendez finished with six strikeouts, one walk and no earned runs.

Mackey allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out one in her sixth complete game of the season. Her streak of eight consecutive wins without a loss to start a season was SOU's longest since Brandi Brown, the program's all-time leader in pitcher wins, won her first 12 starts of the 2003 season.

Starting Friday with Northwest (2 p.m.) and Saturday with British Columbia (11 a.m.), the Raiders will next host five CCC doubleheaders in a span of nine days.
