SOU dominates Great Falls, No. 9 Vanguard to cap tourney

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Southern Oregon University volleyball team was only hoping for progress at the always loaded Biola Summer Slam. That wish was fulfilled, and it came with a 3-1 record after straight-set victories Friday over Great Falls (Mont.) and ninth-ranked Vanguard (Calif.).

A few youngsters new to the rotation stepped up, but team defense stole the show:  The 18th-ranked Raiders held UGF (1-3) to a flat .000 attacking average in a 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 win, and they posted 10 blocks against Vanguard (1-4) in a 25-19, 25-22, 26-24 win.

"I felt really good about the maturity level in how we prepared because you don't typically see that with a group that has 15 underclassmen," SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing said. "In the matches we won, we just didn't allow many big runs. We held them in check, and whenever someone got a little run going we corrected mistakes and came back."

Senior setter Lauren McGowne had 29 assists, five digs, four blocks and three kills in helping the Raiders to a .329 attack, their best of the tourney, against UGF. Redshirt-freshman Taylor Ristvedt established a career-high with nine kills in the match, Nila Lukens had eight, and middles Courtney Macklin and Emma Gasman added seven and six, respectively.

The Raiders never trailed after hitting the five-point mark in any set.

Against Vanguard, Gasman (10 kills) and Macklin (nine kills) teamed up for 19 kills on 30 swings. The Raiders also got a combined 14 assisted blocks out of them and Ristvedt, who had six kills.

Lukens put down 10 more kills, and redshirt-sophomore Ariana Sattler had a breakout match with nine, including six clutch ones on nine swings in the clinching set. On the day, Sattler totaled 14 kills and just four attacking errors. McGowne set them up, registering 33 assists, seven digs and three blocks.

In the back row, Kiley Barcroft had 23 digs and Ashlyn Flynn contributed 16 on the day.

The Raiders – who have gone 10-2 at the Slam the last three years after taking an 0-for in 2013 – resume their road trip Monday with a 5 p.m. date at Hope International.
