Zamores, Raiders ride big first half to 4-0 defeat of Linfield

ASHLAND -- The Southern Oregon men's soccer team will enter Cascade Conference play on a high note and with a record of 2-1 after Saturday night's 4-0 defeat of Linfield College at Raider Stadium.

The Raiders made all of their noise in the first half. Daniel Zamores scored the first two goals in the eighth and 32nd minutes, Mitchell Pinney tallied his first goal as a Raider in the 33rd, and Kelly Gieber finished off the assault with a liner into the net in the 39th for his first at SOU.

Sean McManamon was credited with the first two assists, setting up Zamores with shots that were deflected and put the Linfield defense in compromising positions. Brett Butler assisted Pinney's score with a long pass that led to a one-on-one match with the keeper, and Paul Matyas assisted Gieber's goal with another shot that resulted in a deflection and a clean look.

Linfield fell to 1-3, all against Cascade Conference opponents. The Wildcats, an affiliate of NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference, were out-shot 10-1 in the first half but had a 7-4 advantage in the second.

Jonathan Morales needed to make only two saves for the shutout, his second of the week.

The meeting was the 153rd between Linfield and SOU in all sports, but the first since 2011.
