Gasman helps Raiders avoid upset at Multnomah

PORTLAND – Multnomah's growth and the Southern Oregon volleyball team's growing pains almost resulted in a disastrous combination Friday night at Jim Skagen Court.

Senior middle Emma Gasman was there with a career-high 23 kills to bail the Raiders out, though, and they overcame a 2-1 set deficit to notch a 25-13, 19-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-10 victory over the improved Lions in Cascade Conference play.

After cruising through the first set, the Raiders (6-6 overall, 3-2 CCC) never led in the second and trailed 24-20 in the third before tying it up with four straight points. The rally was cut off when MU's Hannah Antal put down a kill and an SOU attacking error put the Lions (5-6, 1-4) in front.

Tied at 23-all after three straight MU points in the fourth, freshman Gretchen Litzsinger delivered a clutch kill and Gasman guided a two-handed loft to an empty back row on set point.

SOU then scored the first four points of the tiebreaker and held on after MU trimmed the advantage to 12-10. Courtney Macklin's block followed by kills from Gasman and Taylor Ristvedt secured the win.

Gasman had five blocks and only needed 39 swings to reach her kill total, resulting in a .538 attacking average. Ristvedt had six blocks and 11 kills on just 23 attacks for a .435 average. The rest of the Raiders, however, combined to hit negative-.052 with 22 kills.

The Raiders' serve-receive game was also problematic: They had one service aces and committed eight service errors, but they got some help from the Lions, who served into the net 12 times.

SOU setter Lauren McGowne tallied 46 assists and 11 digs, Macklin had six kills and five blocks, and Kiley Barcroft and Ashlyn Flynn had 21 and 18 digs, respectively.

The Lions got 13 kills apiece from Miranda Halverson, Maile Kam and Antal. They hit .096 to SOU's team clip of .164.

The Raiders will make a short trek to southeast Portland for a 5 p.m. matchup Saturday with Warner Pacific, which improved to 4-1 in the CCC with Friday's straight-set defeat of Oregon Tech.
