SOU back in second place after sweep of Walla Walla

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon volleyball team needed 59 minutes to wrap up Saturday night's 25-21, 25-14, 25-17 sweep of Walla Walla at Mountain Avenue Gym, and with their fourth straight victory the Raiders set up a pivotal week ahead.

SOU (9-6 overall, 6-2 Cascade Conference) turned to many of its reserves to continue the streak, including setter Natalie James, who stepped in with a career-high 16 assists, all in the final two sets. Emma Gasman had a team-high 12 kills, Ariana Sattler added 10 and Gretchen Litzsinger chipped in seven kills and two aces.

As a team the Raiders attacked at an average of .289, their highest of the season. Lauren McGowne totaled 13 assists in one set of action and moved into second place on SOU's career list with 3,880.

SOU is back in a three-way tie for second place with Corban and Northwest after the former knocked off the latter Saturday night. Next weekend, the Raiders will host College of Idaho at 7:30 p.m. Friday and first-place Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Wolves (1-11, 0-8) were led by Lauren Barlow's 11 kills and Krista Schafer's 14 assists.

A handful of other Raiders were effective in limited time: Taylor Ristvedt had six kills on nine swings in one set, Kiley Barcroft and Ashlyn Flynn controlled seven digs apiece, and Hannah Bogatin posted a career-high six kills over the last two sets.

SOU was also right around its average again with eight blocks, led by four apiece from Gasman and Macklin and three assisted for Sattler.
